Giving back can be rewarding for individuals and organisations alike. Whether financially, sharing expertise (volunteering) or being an advocate for the work various charities do.
If you haven’t decided where to make your end of year tax-deductible donation, here are three options. Rest assured, whichever charity you decide to donate to, your hard-earned cash (or expertise) will go towards making a better community now and for the future. And if you don’t have any cash to give, keep reading because there are still ways you can make a difference.
1. Interested in supporting the well being of family pets and the impact they make on so many individuals in homes and communities? Then donate to Staffy Rescue and #rescuedogs
Mayvin Global’s mascot is a three year old Staffy that was adopted from Staffy Rescue. This charity has a ‘no kill’ policy and is committed to saving and re-homing as many staffy’s and large breed dogs as possible.
Being a ‘no kill’ rescue means that every dog rescued from the pound is loved and cared for no matter how long it takes for them to find their forever home.
Staffy Rescue is self funded and is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers.
For the dog lovers, here’s a video that will melt your heart – look out for “Ruckus”

2. Interested in Supporting NSW Communities, Education, Women, Employment, Equality? Then donate to Dress For Success Sydney
More than 100,000 women are seeking employment in NSW with countless more underemployed. Many women struggle to support themselves and their families week to week. Dress for Success exists to promote equality and fairness for all women, and a donation will forever change a woman’s future. Financial support from donors helps offer a wide range of programs helping women to achieve economic empowerment, appropriately clothed and skilled for an interview as the first step.
I have been a volunteer with Dress for Success Sydney since January 2016 and served on their board for 15 months in 2017/2018. Donate here
3. Interested in Music, Jazz, Women, Education, Arts? Then donate to Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA)
SIMA is committed to promoting the performance of contemporary jazz and improvised music. Through their performance programs, they create and facilitate a vibrant jazz culture in Sydney and Australia. Donations support young artists, women’s jazz workshops and more.
I have been on the Board of SIMA since July 2016 and experience the international and local talent this association brings to the Australian music scene as often as possible.

4. What if you can’t donate cash – but still want to giveback?
Many #charities value non-cash items that help their mission. The Australian Red Cross always needs blood, particularly around peak holiday or long weekend periods. If you have a unique or less common blood type or are also willing to donate platelets this is also valuable. One donation of blood can save three lives. After donating, the Australian Red Cross tells you when your donation has been put into action. You will feel an incredible sense of joy when you hear that news. It’s so easy to potentially save a life, and in my case – less than 5 minutes for me to donate sufficient blood.
There are other charities like the MS Society that runs incredible fundraising events or initiatives to drive fundraising. These activities are also important awareness programs. If you can’t raise the cash yourself, by getting fit, you encourage others to support you and raise money. Alternatively, #volunteer at these events. Many charities have information on their website on how to volunteer or participate.
Deanna Varga is the savvy, commercially-minded leader of Mayvin Global. This boutique consultancy gives back a portion of profits to three charities annually. Deanna Varga is a regular blood donor and has volunteered with Dress for Success Sydney, OzHarvest, MS Society and SIMA.
Mayvin Global is a consultancy that specialises in unpacking and reframing issues to deliver commercial and revenue generation solutions in tourism, business events, government agencies and the arts.
