EOFY giving: What if you didn’t get a chance to donate, but still want to #giveback?

Jun 21, 2019 | Blog

Giving back can be rewarding for individuals and organisations alike, but if you aren’t flush with cash, it doesn’t have to cost you anything more than your time. There are many ways you can make a difference, such as sharing your expertise (volunteering) or being an advocate for the work various charities do.

We support several charities, including MS Society, Staffy Rescue, Transport Heritage NSW, and Dress for Success Sydney. Deanna Varga is also a regular blood donor (22 donations so far) and each financial year our business dollar-matches the contributions our staff make to their chosen charities. Wherever your interest, passion or talent lies, there’s bound to be an organisation that could benefit from what you can give.

With that in mind, here are our suggestions of some tax-deductible and non-financial options for you to consider for future giving.

  1. Staffy Rescue: This is a charity that is particularly close to my heart. It’s where we adopted Mayvin Global’s mascot #ruckusmakesthree. The charity is self-funded and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers whose mission is to save and rehome as many staffy and large breed dogs as possible. And, with a ‘no kill’ policy, that means every dog will find its forever home. For the dog lovers, here’s a video that will melt your heart – look out for “Ruckus”Donate here

  2. Dress for Success Sydney: A donation (cash or business clothing) will forever change the futures of women struggling to find work and support themselves and their families. If you believe in equality and fairness for all women, and want to help more women achieve economic empowerment, why not start by helping with that first crucial step: ensuring they are appropriately clothed and skilled for an interview. Dress for Success, Sydney also has an annual campaign called Empower Hour, where you only need to give one hour of your salary to help improve the life of a female and the community in which she lives.

  3. Transport Heritage NSW: This not-for-profit, member-based organisation exists to make sure we remain connected with our past. The sound of a steam train rolling into Central Station for one of its public joy rides is a treasure for young old and if you think this should be preserved for generations to come, then this is an organisation worth supporting. I recently attended the Transport Heritage Expo in Sydney to see their work in action after recently being appointed to the THNSW Board. It was a great example of museums working in partnership to bring people together to experience, see and interact with our history and for many (like me!) a bit of nostalgia. There are many ways to get involved.

  4. Australian Red Cross Blood Service: The Australian Red Cross always needs blood – up to 25,000 donations every week – and are critically low coming into this year’s flu season. One donation of blood can save three lives and help with up to 22 different medical treatments. All it takes is a few minutes of your time – less than 10 mins in fact – to make a big difference to the lives of many people, typically suffering from trauma situations or receiving cancer treatment. Earlier this month, I made my 22nd. Find your nearest donor centre.

There are other charities that run incredible fundraising events or initiatives to drive fundraising. These activities are also important awareness programs. Many charities have information on their websites about how you can get involved – financially or otherwise.
